Google has launched Gemini for government services, an AI platform designed to help local agencies handle paperwork-heavy tasks, including reviewing residents’ applications, assessing procurement bids and identifying missing documentation. Government employees remain responsible for decisions on benefits, contracts and legal matters.

The platform is currently in preview. Early adopters include the State of Missouri and the US Department of Health and Human Services. Google says deployments will help provide further insight into the technology’s effects on processing times and backlogs.

AI agents can check submitted documents for missing signatures or inconsistencies, compare supplier proposals with procurement requirements and draft justifications for scores. Chris Hein, Google Public Sector’s Field CTO, said administrative workflows such as document intake, records discovery, policy research and bid reviews are among the strongest potential uses for AI.

The service connects to an agency’s existing Gemini instance. According to Hein, agencies already using Gemini should need little additional configuration, while those without a Google Cloud project will need to set up security and user identity arrangements.

The platform includes centralised audit logs and role-based access controls, and agencies can adjust agent behaviour to suit their operations. Hein said its outputs are grounded in official regulations and authenticated agency records, with page and paragraph citations provided for findings and recommendations. Human review and approval are required before decisions are made.
